The protagonist reaches Hvalkeld, located on a plateau. A fortress constructed of bones enhanced by magic enchantments. A watchman orders the protagonist to stop outside the walls. They recognize him as the hero of Skjallhaven and open the gates to let him inside. He asks the elders for a truce with Skjallhaven, they agree on the condition that he defeats the undead from the western crypts troubling them. In order to kill the undead he needs to become a spirit warrior, which requires passing three trials of fire during the hours of darkness. He successfully walks on coals, shoots a cursed bird from the sky with a flaming arrow and wrestles a boar on top of a fire. He is badly burned but survives and becomes a spirit warrior.
