The protagonist travels on his way to Hvalkeld in a bid to make peace with the tribe there who are at war with Skjallhaven. On the way he traverses some hills and sees a great forest. Named Birdwood, as a concentration of birds is flying around the edge, afraid of flying too close to a curse within. He ascends to the peak of a mountain where he makes a sacrifice to the mountain spirit. Seeking guidance from the spirit he describes events prior to his exile, where he killed a woman in battle by disemboweling her. He drove his sword Falthar up through her genitals and into her vital internal organs, subsequent to her cutting out one of his eyes. He falls in love with her as she dies, following this he stays in love with her keeping her skull with him at all times in a bag. He describes how his exilement has produced in him a change which has allowed him to feel and fear, however now his is subjected to the torment of his past deeds. The Spirit tells him that only death will free him from torment, and he will die by fire. Until that point he will be unbeatable.
